Artist's Comments

DC Comics' Aquaman. One of my warm-up sketches from today. Because he gets no love.

This is the version of Aquaman I grew up reading. I loved the guy. Before the moodiness, before the angst, before the beard, before the "my hand was eaten off by piranhas." Back in the days when he still wore the orange shirt, but had ditched the black undies and went with green pants and long fins on his gloves and grew his hair out a bit-- that's the guy.

I think he was only this way for a short period (a couple of mini-series at most), right before his regular, Peter David-written comic series began, but still. I do have to say that I loved the Peter David stuff and read the hell out of that series, but I hated his outfit after he lost the hand in issue #2. He looked like he was wearing a metal sling or something. Ugh.

Anyway, this is the Aquaman I loved best.

Yeah, I couldn't go the emo route! I had enough of that during the course of his comic series. I mean, I don't mind him being all badass and showing that he actually can hold his own against other heroes, but... Couldn't he have had some happy moments?

A long time ago, I saw a painting of him in his orange scale mail and green pants with the long hair in which he really looked cool, heroic, and non-goofy. It was the first time I realized that his costume could be really cool, it just depended on the artist. This sketch does him the same justice that the painting gave him, and I'm thrilled to see him looking so good. Its one of those things about DC that can annoy me visually. The Flash needs to have the blank white eyes like Batman. In the JL cartoon, thats how he looked and he looked cool. Its the little things that can enhance and cool-ify DCs characters. I challenge you to draw all of the big guns looking their best. Love the pic, Leanne. Awesome pose!

the only time i'd see him in this outfit, he'd have his short, "superfriends" haircut. i always liked this costume best, but i now prefer him with the longer hair

I remeber reading that and feeling both sadness & pride. Yeah, he lost his hand, but he was still gonna go kick some butt!

Friendship is like peeing your pants, everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth .
