Power-Con!

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 22, 2011, 8:33 PM
  • Mood: Zeal
  • Listening to: Rammstein
  • Watching: Doctor Who (Classic) Season 17

In just a few hours I'll be on a plane bound for Los Angeles, CA where I will be a guest at the first ever Power-Con/ThunderCon, a convention devoted solely to Masters of the Universe and ThunderCats.

There is a really large and impressive guest list, and I'm looking forward to seeing a bunch of friends I haven't seen in years.

There will also be a charity auction at the show, with proceeds going towards the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation.  For more information on how you can bid on a piece of art (regardless of whether or not you'll be attending the con yourself), go here.

The inked piece I donated for the art auction measures 11" x 17" and features Stratos, Teela, He-Man, Man-At-Arms and Skeletor.  While the original black and white lineart will be auctioned off, I will be selling prints of the colored version at my table:

(For a "making of" re: this charity piece, check out my blog.)

And with that, I'm off to finish packing up the last of my things. See you in CA!

I don't know why it took me so long to find you on DA (I kept forgetting to look) - I was the girl at Richmond Comic-Con who was a big fan of Tonks and Lupin. I think I showed you pictures from our Final Battle photoshoot that had happened at Dragon*Con. I just wanted to say hi and that I love the Potter art I bought from you - it's set up neatly on my desk!

Dude, it's sad but Potter has taken over my life... Like, I have no control over it anymore. Only the Boy Who Lived does.

Can I ask you something? How did you get into the visual industry?

I'm a recent graduate and having a tough time of it.

It depends what type of work you'd like to get into. Not long after I graduated I joined an art studio with some friends, which helped me break in initially. I would suggest (if you're looking to get into comics, at least) going to conventions and showing your portfolio around. Get feedback and advice, then come back and do it again. It's the best way to make connections and a good first step into breaking in.
